The City of Massillon’s Wastewater Treatment Facility is located on the southwest side of the City beside Massillon Marketplace.  It was originally built in 1937 to treat 5.2 million gallons of wastewater per day.   The last upgrade was in 2002 to expand the treatment to capability to 15.8 million gallons per day.  We are a regional facility with 50% of our raw flow coming in from outside the City limits.

Our EPA Discharge Permit requires we remove pollutants from the raw wastewater prior to discharge to the Tuscarawas River.  Those pollutants include:  organic compounds, solids, ammonia, and harmful bacteria.  We monitor pH, dissolved oxygen levels, heavy metals, phosphorus compounds, and other potentially harmful compounds.

The treatment facility’s latest Discharge Permit requires that we begin the process of treating for higher removal rates for phosphorus.  This will require another facility expansion to remove the phosphorus with either physical or chemical processes.  This expansion will also allow us to increase the amount of flow coming into the plant.  This will allow for greater residential and industrial growth.

Odor control has been a primary goal for plant management.  Through chemical treatment, odors at the plant have been significantly reduced from years past.
